CAM Research and Education

We are going to start our new research segment of NCAM, which will be a weekly feature involving NCAM members and officers. Our goal is to familiarize our members with research techniques investigators undertake to qualify and quantify the efficacy of CAM-based therapies. This is how it will work:

1) Every week you will receive an email with a link to a recent research study published on a topic related to CAM.
2) Two challenge questions will be presented, with the goal of engaging members in scientific inquiry and analysis.
3) Every question you answer = 1 raffle ticket into our weekly drawing!

This week we’ll be featuring¬†Mindful Meditation. We’ve attached a study that you guys should all look over.

We have designated two challenge questions for everyone to answer. Each question you answer provides you one entry into our raffle! Winners will be announced next week. Detailed explanations (up to a paragraph) will be awarded 2 raffle tickets per response.

Challenge question 1: Mindful meditation is said to heighten interoceptive and conscious awareness, functions which are believed to be mediated by the insula of the brain. Did the investigators find that mindful meditation produced changes in the insula? Why or why not?

Challenge question 2: What did the researchers find that supports the idea that meditation can enhance structures involved in mood processing and sleep patterns? (Hint: Read the Discussion section).

We hope you find the paper interesting and useful in furthering your knowledge of CAM research :) Please email all responses to our VP -ewang128[at]gmail[dot]com. The winner will be announced at this upcoming week’s main event (Breathwork), where he/she will receive a FREE book on Mindful Meditation written by UCLA’s own Dr. Susan Smalley and Diana Winston! Exciting!
